The Possibility of Life Imprionment
Felonies in North Carolina are divided into ten separate categories, each with its own punishment potential. These categories are identified with a particular classification of the crime ranging from a Class A felony at the top to a Class I felony at the bottom. The maximum punishment under the law for a felony is death or life without parole. Even the lowest felony category, Class I, allows for the possibility of imprisonment for a maximum of 24 months. Having an experienced criminal defense attorney may mean the difference between going to jail and going home with your family.
